A festival for single men in Sicily
The “schietti” festival is a centuries-old celebration deeply woven into the fabric of Terrasini’s identity. Recognized in 2011 as an intangible cultural asset by the Region of Sicily, the festival honors unmarried men who display both physical strength and cultural pride.

Easter Eve Rituals
The festivities commence on Easter Eve with a series of solemn yet festive rituals. A bitter orange tree—chosen for its weight (about 50 kilograms) and striking appearance—is carefully cut down. The tree is then adorned with ribbons, trinkets, and other decorative items, symbolizing community prosperity and renewal. Once decorated, the tree is blessed, setting the stage for the main event.
The Strength Challenge
Come Easter Sunday, the heart of the celebration unfolds in the town square and along its streets. Here, the schietti -unmarried village men -compete in a unique test of strength. With only one arm, each contestant attempts to hoist the decorated tree as high as possible, engaging in a time trial where endurance is paramount. The man who manages to keep the tree aloft the longest is declared the champion for the year, a title that signifies not only personal achievement but also a rite of passage into recognized adulthood.

A Festival of Community and Courtship
Beyond its role as a contest of might, the festival plays an integral part in fostering community spirit. The event is a social celebration, with local residents gathering to cheer on the competitors. Often, the contest takes place beneath the balconies of local women—referred to as “zita” (girlfriend)—adding a layer of courtship and communal interaction to the proceedings.
Embracing the Future
In recent years, the festival has evolved to engage younger generations. A parallel contest featuring a custom-made, lighter tree has been introduced, allowing children to participate and experience the thrill of the challenge. This adaptation ensures that the tradition remains vibrant and accessible, nurturing the values of strength and community spirit among all ages.

A Reminder of our rich history
Today, the schietti festival stands as a vivid reminder of the village’s rich history and the enduring traditions that continue to unite and inspire its people. It is a celebration that marries the physical with the cultural—a dynamic display of strength, independence, and the timeless bonds of community.
